Import Declarant
Location: Felixstowe, Suffolk
Salary: £28,000 – £32,000
Hours: Monday-Friday, 9:00am-5:30pm (Office Based)
The Role
We are seeking an Import Declarant to join our growing customs and freight forwarding team based in Felixstowe. This role will focus primarily on import customs clearances across sea freight and air freight shipments, ensuring all declarations are completed accurately and compliantly.
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing approximately 10 deep-sea and Middle Eastern ocean import entries, alongside supporting around 15 mixed-origin air freight shipments. Experience with exports would be beneficial but is not essential.
Full training will be provided, making this an excellent opportunity for someone with customs experience looking to further develop their knowledge and career.
Key Responsibilities
- Complete import customs declarations using the Descartes platform.
- Process approximately 10 deep-sea and Middle Eastern ocean freight entries.
- Support the clearance of mixed-origin air freight shipments.
- Review and verify shipping and customs documentation prior to entry submission.
- Check tariff classifications and amend declarations in line with importer agreements and country of origin requirements.
- Collect and process UCN information.
- Ensure customs entries are completed accurately and in accordance with HMRC regulations.
- Liaise with customers, carriers and internal teams to resolve customs-related queries.
- Support customs activities across key UK ports including Felixstowe, Southampton and London Gateway.
Requirements
- Previous customs clearance or import declaration experience preferred.
- Export customs experience would be advantageous but is not essential.
- Good understanding of customs documentation and classification processes.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Good IT skills and ability to learn new systems.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple shipments.
