Cygnet Group are currently looking to recruit aMental Health Law Practitioner to join our team at Cygnet Hospital Oldbury, which offers a range of secure mental health services for men in a purpose-built therapeutic environment.

You will work 40 hours per week (Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm (site-based) 

Cygnet Hospital Oldbury is our state-of-the-art PICU & Acute hospital for women, in the West Midlands.

The service has two wards, a 12 bed PICU ward and a 15 bed Acute ward. Cygnet Hospital Oldbury has a full multi-disciplinary team (MDT) and supports the acute needs of adults requiring rapid access to mental health services, including those who may need an intensive care environment.

Rosa Ward, our 12 bed female PICU, accepts emergency and crisis admissions. Referrals can come to us from all areas, including acute and prison services. Our aim is a short, rapid intervention to help individuals regain a sense of control and order in their lives, so they can move to a less restrictive care setting and ultimately return home.

Emmeline Ward, our 15 bed female emergency acute inpatient service, provides a safe and stabilising environment for individuals who are experiencing an acute episode of mental illness and require an emergency admission.

Your day-to-day:

  • To ensure that all procedures relative to the Mental Health Act and associated legislation are adhered to.

  • Ensure the legal detention of patients.

  • Ensure adequate records for detained patients are maintained.

  • Ensure adequate and safe storage of documentation.

  • Receive section papers during working hours.

  • Arrange correction of errors relating to detention of patients to meet all legal requirements.

  • Ensure patient and nearest relatives are aware of individual rights and power of detention in force and assist as required with exercising these rights.

  • Ensure an up-to-date list of mental health solicitors is available to patients and that patients are represented at hearings or appeals where possible or appropriate.

We are looking for people who have:

  • Experienced Mental Health Act Administrator with a minimum of 2 years of experience.

  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams.

  • Educated to GCSE level (or equivalent) with qualifications in English and Maths

  • Exceptional organisational skills

  • Experience of working in a Healthcare environment alongside Medical Practitioners

  • Knowledge of Mental Health Act 1983 (MHA 2007)

  • Knowledge of compliance and auditing systems required by regulatory bodies (CQC)

  • Experience in taking minutes during meetings
