The principal responsibility of the Firearms Enquiry Officer is to undertake enquiries to support the effective control of firearms and ammunition to ensure public safety and full compliance with legislation, Home Office directives and Alliance policy. In particular to:
• Undertake visits to applicants’ premises where necessary to ensure appropriate secure firearms and ammunition storage and that the premises are suitably secure, providing crime prevention advice to minimise the potential theft and misuse of firearms and ammunition. • Interview applicants, paying particular attention to family circumstances, the level of domestic harmony, personal habits, especially mental health issues, domestic abuse, substance abuse and any other factor that may raise concerns over the suitability of the applicant to hold a firearms certificate. • Be the decision maker and/or provide recommendations, dependent upon risk, as to whether a certificate should be granted, clearly identifying areas of concern, and where appropriate, advising force colleagues or other partner agencies. Ensure contentious applications are referred to the supervisor.
