SEN Teaching Assistant

Location: St Albans 

Hours: 8:30am – 3:30pm (term-time only)

Pay Rate: £95+

Are you a compassionate and dedicated individual with a passion for supporting children and young people with complex learning needs? We are seeking an enthusiastic PMLD & SLD Teaching Assistant to join our supportive SEN provision as soon as possible.

About the Role

You will work closely with teaching staff and therapists to support pupils with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) and Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD). The role involves providing tailored support to help pupils access learning, develop communication skills, and achieve their individual outcomes in a safe and nurturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support for pupils with PMLD and SLD.
  • Assist with the implementation of individual education plans (IEPs) and personalised learning activities.
  • Support pupils with sensory needs, communication strategies, and engagement in classroom activities.
  • Assist with personal care, including feeding, toileting, and changing, while maintaining dignity and promoting independence.
  • Use a range of communication methods, such as Makaton, PECS, or visual supports, where appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and families to ensure the best outcomes for pupils.
  • Promote positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing.
  • Maintain accurate records and contribute to pupil progress reviews.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Experience working with children or young people with PMLD, SLD, or other complex needs (in a school, care, or support setting).
  • A patient, caring, and resilient approach.
  • Confidence supporting pupils with personal care needs.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
  • Relevant qualifications in education, childcare, health and social care, or SEN support are desirable but not essential.
  • Knowledge of Makaton, PECS, sensory integration, or moving and handling techniques would be advantageous.
