Description
- The College Accountant (Head of Finance) is responsible for providing strategic financial leadership and delivering high-quality financial management, reporting, and analysis across the College. The role oversees all aspects of statutory financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and audit, and ensures robust financial controls and effective treasury, investment, and risk management.
You will work closely with the Bursar, acting as Deputy when required, and partner with academic and administrative colleagues to support informed decision-making and the effective allocation of resources. The duties will include:
- Lead all statutory financial reporting, regulatory returns, and external audit processes, ensuring the highest standards of governance and compliance.
- Oversee financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and performance monitoring in collaboration with senior academic and administrative leaders.
- Manage relationships with external investment managers and deliver financial analysis and reporting for the Investment Committee.
- Oversee treasury management, taxation (including VAT, corporation tax, and payroll taxes), insurance arrangements, and financial risk frameworks.
- Improve financial systems, processes, and reporting to strengthen internal controls and support evidence-based decision-making.
- Oversee a small finance team, hiring and developing of staff.
- Act as Deputy to the Bursar, providing executive oversight of finance, governance, and operational matters when required
Profile
A successful College Accountant (Head of Finance) will bring:
- A recognised accountancy qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
- Significant experience in senior financial leadership, ideally within the charity, higher education, or public sector environment.
- Proven expertise in strategic financial planning, governance, and financial control.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships across a diverse community.
- Team management experience.
- The confidence and credibility to advise senior stakeholders and contribute to organisational strategy.
