I am currently working with a fantastic Primary school based in the South lakes area. The school are looking to appoint a qualified and experienced teaching assistant to join them in September. The role will be working Monday to Friday in a mixed year 5/6 class. The role is supporting 4 students with full time EHCP plans along with 2 very experienced Support assistants.
Purpose of the Role
To provide dedicated 1:1 support for a named pupil within a mixed Year 5/6 class, enabling them to access the curriculum, develop independence, and achieve their full potential academically, socially, and emotionally.
Key Responsibilities
Pupil Support
- Work on a 1:1 basis with a specific pupil, supporting learning in line with the class teacher’s plans and EHCP (if applicable).
- Adapt learning activities to meet the pupil’s individual needs.
- Support the pupil in developing independence, confidence, and self-esteem.
- Assist with emotional regulation and behaviour management in line with school policies.
- Monitor and record progress, providing feedback to the class teacher and SENDCo.
Classroom Support
- Support the class teacher in delivering high-quality teaching and learning.
- Help prepare resources and learning materials tailored to the pupil’s needs.
- Assist in small group work where appropriate.
- Promote inclusion by supporting the pupil’s participation in whole-class activities.
Special Educational Needs (SEN) Support
- Implement strategies outlined in the pupil’s EHCP, IEP, or support plans.
- Work closely with the SENDCo and external professionals (e.g., speech and language therapists).
- Support the pupil with additional needs such as:
- ASD / ADHD
- SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health)
- Learning difficulties
- Use appropriate strategies such as visual supports, sensory breaks, or structured routines.
Behaviour & Safeguarding
- Promote positive behaviour and follow the school’s behaviour policy.
- Be vigilant in safeguarding and child protection, reporting concerns immediately.
- Ensure a safe and supportive learning environment at all times.
Communication
- Liaise regularly with the class teacher, SENDCo, and other staff.
- Provide feedback on pupil progress and wellbeing.
- Contribute to review meetings where required.
Person Specification
Essential Skills & Experience
- Experience working with primary-aged children, ideally in KS2.
- Understanding of supporting pupils with SEN.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to build positive relationships with pupils and staff.
- Patience, empathy, and a nurturing approach.
- Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
Desirable
- Experience working 1:1 with a child with additional needs.
- Knowledge of safeguarding procedures.
- Relevant qualification (e.g., Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant).
- Experience with behaviour support strategies or interventions.

Working Conditions
- Based in a mixed Year 5/6 classroom
- May involve supporting the pupil during break/lunch times if required
