Senior Design Engineer

CMD Recruitment are partnering with our client, an established manufacturing business, as they look to welcome a Senior Design Engineer to their growing automation team.
Operating within a fast-growing sector, they design and integrate bespoke engineering systems for UK manufacturers. This is a fantastic opportunity for an engineer with a strong background in industrial automation to join a forward-thinking business that genuinely values tailored engineering and offers complete project ownership.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the end-to-end design of robotic cells, End of Arm Tooling (EOAT), fixtures, and machine structures using SolidWorks and 3D CAD from initial concept to commissioning.
- Select and integrate mechanical, pneumatic, and vacuum components into automation systems, applying DFMA principles for cost-effective and reliable solutions.
- Support workshop assembly, testing, site installation, and commissioning activities, including occasional travel to customer sites across the UK.
- Oversee technical documentation and PDM systems, providing technical guidance and engineering change control across the business.
- Manage multiple design projects and priorities simultaneously, collaborating closely with production, controls, and sales teams.
- Build strong, trusted relationships with customers and suppliers, focusing on customer-centric, practical solutions.
Skills & Experience:
- Proficiency with Solidworks and 3D CAD design for manufacturing and assembly.
- A solid background in industrial automation, robotics, or special-purpose machinery is essential for this role.
- Practical experience in the selection and integration of mechanical, pneumatic, and vacuum components.
Experience producing detailed manufacturing drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and assembly documentation. - Ideally hold an HNC/HND or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related discipline, though equivalent hands-on industry experience is highly valued.
- A full UK driving licence is essential, along with a proactive, self-motivated approach to problem-solving.
Hours of work for this role are Monday to Thursday 8am – 5pm (30-minute unpaid lunch), Friday 8am – 1pm.
