Child Care Lawyer – Locum

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Child Care Lawyer to join the established Legal Team on a locum basis.

This role offers the opportunity to work within a highly regarded Child Law Team, delivering specialist legal services across a broad range of public law children matters. The successful candidate will manage a full caseload of complex child protection proceedings, providing strategic legal advice and representation to social care clients and key stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct all aspects of public law children proceedings.
  • Prepare and issue care proceedings applications.
  • Draft legal documentation, witness statements and court pleadings.
  • Prepare court bundles and supporting documentation.
  • Provide timely and pragmatic legal advice to social care teams.
  • Represent the authority in the Family Court where appropriate.
  • Attend legal planning meetings and case conferences.
  • Liaise with counsel, experts, external agencies and internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure all work is delivered to a high standard and within court timetables.

Essential Requirements

  • Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or FCILEx Lawyer.
  • Significant experience handling public law children matters.
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Children Act 1989
    • Public Law Outline (PLO)
    • Care proceedings
    • Child protection law and practice
  • Ability to manage a demanding caseload with minimal supervision.
  • Strong advocacy and stakeholder management skills.
  • Excellent drafting and advisory capabilities.

Working Arrangements

  • Hybrid working available.
  • Attendance at the office required for meetings and team collaboration.
  • Attendance at in-person hearings and legal planning meetings as required.
