Disability Fitness Instuctor

  1. Role Summary 

The role is responsible for the provision of Instructing and support of disabled people being more physically active, by delivering inclusive physical activity opportunities, that meet the needs of people with learning disabilities, physical disabilities and other additional supported needs and deliver excellent customer service. 

The Disability Activity Instructor is responsible to the Community Sports Manager.

Each of these themes sets out long term ambitions; which are regularly reviewed and updated and are reflected in the responsibilities and accountabilities of this role (Section 3 below).  

 
 
 
 
 

  1. Responsibilities and Accountabilities 

3.1 Key Responsibilities  

  • Deliver a range of inclusive physical activity sessions, including adapted fitness classes, gym-based activities, social sport sessions and wellbeing activities. 

  • Provide one-to-one support and gym inductions for participants with a range of disabilities and additional needs. 

  • Adapt activities, equipment and delivery methods to ensure sessions are safe, engaging and accessible for all participants. 

  • Support participants to build confidence and develop the knowledge and skills required to access leisure facilities independently where appropriate. 

  • Create a welcoming, inclusive and supportive environment that encourages participation and social connection. 

  • Develop and maintain relationships with organisations supporting disabled people, including charities, support providers, community groups and health services. 

  • Undertake outreach activities to promote available programmes and raise awareness of opportunities across Manchester. 

  • Support participant recruitment through referrals and self-referral pathways. 

  • Collect monitoring information, participant feedback and case studies to demonstrate programme impact. 

  • Work collaboratively with centre teams to improve accessibility and inclusion within leisure services. 

  • Support the development of sustainable activity opportunities that enable participants to remain active beyond initial programmes. 

 
 

3.2 Personal Development  

  • To ensure that all necessary qualifications for the post are maintained and renewed.  

  • Keep abreast of trends and developments within leisure and health and fitness, and discuss own training and development needs with the Supervisor. 

 
 

3.3 Other     

  • Act in accordance with, and actively promotes all GLL policies and standards. 

  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the post’s level of responsibility or required particularly as a result of events outside of GLL’s business control (pandemics etc). 

  • Work flexibly in line with the needs of the business at peak flow times, evenings and weekends.  

  • Deliver critical incident management as and when required.  

  1. Key Working Relationships 
  • Reports to Community Sports Manager. 

  • To constructively interact with different people in a variety of areas within the operational team and GLL support services.  

  • Builds good working relationships with all GLL colleagues, working both proactively and collaboratively.  

  • Builds positive and progressive relationships with local authority partners as required.
