An established engineering organisation within the UK utilities sector is looking to recruit an experienced Secondary Design Engineer to join its growing design team.
This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with experience in LV and 11kV electrical distribution design who is looking to work on a wide range of utility infrastructure projects, including residential and commercial developments, industrial connections, EV charging schemes, network reinforcement and new HV/LV substations.
The Role
You will be responsible for producing high-quality, compliant electrical designs for distribution networks up to and including 11kV, ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently and in accordance with industry standards.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing LV distribution networks and 11kV cable connections.
- Producing HV/LV secondary substation layouts and single-line diagrams.
- Preparing cable sizing, voltage drop, load and transformer calculations.
- Developing construction drawings, design packs and technical documentation.
- Producing G81-compliant designs for DNO and IDNO approval.
- Supporting design submissions and responding to technical review comments.
- Coordinating with project managers, clients, contractors and network operators.
- Providing technical support throughout project delivery, including site visits where required.
About You
We're looking for candidates with:
- Experience designing LV and 11kV electrical distribution networks.
- Knowledge of DNO and/or IDNO design standards.
- Understanding of ENA G81 requirements and utility connections.
- Experience producing technical drawings using AutoCAD or similar CAD software.
- Ability to complete electrical design calculations including cable sizing, voltage drop and load assessments.
- Strong communication and organisational skills.
- HNC, HND or Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
Desirable
- Experience within an ICP, DNO, IDNO or utility consultancy.
- Knowledge of secondary substations and utility connection design.
- Experience with EV charging, renewable energy or battery storage connections.
- Working towards or holding professional registration (EngTech, IEng or CEng).
