Altum Consulting is partnering with an international foundation working in climate philanthropy and grantmaking to recruit an Interim Director of Finance for a contract planned to last 12-18 months.
The organisation is entering a new four-year strategy period, with strong ambition but also a high degree of external uncertainty. Future scenarios could range from further growth to consolidation, so this role will be critical in helping the Executive Director, SLT and Board make well-informed decisions around finance, risk and sustainability.
This is a senior interim leadership role, with a strong finance team in place, including excellent leads across finance and FP&A. The priority is to bring senior finance expertise into the leadership space, provide clear financial scrutiny, and support the team without crowding them out.
The role will report to the Executive Director and sit on the Senior Leadership Team.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Leading the finance function through a period of change and transition
- Advising the Executive Director, SLT and Board on financial strategy, risk and sustainability
- Leading scenario planning, long-term financial planning, budgeting and forecasting
- Ensuring strong reporting, controls, audit, compliance and financial governance
- Supporting donor reporting, grantmaking and fundraising with high-quality financial insight
- Coaching and empowering the Head of Finance and Head of FP&A
- Helping finance play a stronger role in organisational decision-making
- Supporting the move towards a future permanent leadership structure
The ideal candidate will bring:
- Senior finance leadership experience, ideally in international non-profit, philanthropy, grantmaking or another mission-led setting
- Strong experience across financial strategy, planning, modelling, budgeting and risk
- Confidence working with Boards, Executive Directors and senior leadership teams
- Good understanding of donor funding, restricted funds or grantmaking environments
- A calm, collaborative and coaching-led leadership style
- Strong judgement and the ability to work well through uncertainty and change
- A strong commitment to JEDI principles (Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion), particularly inclusive leadership
- A recognised accountancy qualification or equivalent experience
This role would suit an experienced Finance Director or senior interim who can get up to speed quickly, bring clarity and challenge, and help an ambitious organisation make good decisions during a complex period.
