The Opportunity
Our client is a rapidly growing £20m turnover business that has expanded significantly since its inception. Following sustained growth and increasing operational complexity, they are now looking to appoint an experienced Finance Manager to take ownership of the finance function and provide the financial reporting, controls and commercial insight needed to support the next stage of their journey.
Historically, much of the finance function has been handled externally, resulting in limited management information and a lack of visibility for senior leadership. This newly created role represents a key appointment for the business, providing the opportunity to establish robust financial processes, improve reporting, strengthen controls and act as a trusted business partner to the commercial and operational teams.
This is a hands-on role requiring a proactive individual who is comfortable working at both a strategic and operational level.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Management Accounts
- Produce accurate monthly management accounts within a 10-day reporting cycle.
- Deliver detailed actual versus budget analysis and commentary.
- Prepare balance sheet reconciliations and supporting schedules.
- Develop meaningful management information for the Senior Leadership Team.
- Support year-end accounts preparation and external audit requirements.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Commercial Finance
- Lead annual budgeting and forecasting processes.
- Monitor business performance against forecasts and budgets.
- Provide commercial analysis to support operational decision-making.
- Partner closely with the commercial team and senior management to improve profitability and cash flow.
Cashflow & Working Capital Management
- Manage day-to-day cashflow reporting and forecasting.
- Take ownership of the company's factoring arrangements, ensuring effective management and control.
- Oversee retentions reporting and monitoring.
- Drive credit control performance and working capital improvements.
Financial Controls & Compliance
- Manage VAT returns and statutory reporting requirements.
- Oversee CIS administration, reporting and payments.
- Ensure Companies House filing obligations are met.
- Maintain fixed asset registers and controls.
- Manage PAYE and National Insurance liabilities.
- Ensure subcontractor compliance, including insurance and statutory requirements.
Transactional Finance Oversight
- Oversee Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable activities.
- Ensure robust purchase order controls are maintained in partnership with Procurement.
- Supervise invoice processing and finance administration activities undertaken by the Bristol office.
- Manage bank reconciliations and Sage integrations.
- Support payroll processing, including timesheet analysis for operatives and subcontractors.
Finance Function Development
- Improve and streamline existing finance processes and controls.
- Reduce duplication between operational and finance systems.
- Develop confidence in the integrity of financial data across the business.
- Introduce greater financial visibility and accountability throughout the organisation.
About You
We are looking for an experienced Finance Manager who enjoys operating in a growing, fast-paced environment and isn't afraid to roll their sleeves up when required.
You will ideally have:
- Proven experience producing monthly management accounts.
- Strong budgeting and forecasting experience.
- Experience managing cashflow and working capital.
- Previous exposure to invoice finance/factoring facilities.
- Excellent financial controls and compliance knowledge, including VAT and CIS.
- Strong systems experience, ideally Sage.
- A commercial mindset and the confidence to challenge and influence stakeholders.
- The ability to build credibility across both finance and operational teams.
- Construction or contractor-based industry experience would be advantageous.
