About the Role

This is an exciting, permanent, full-time position for an enthusiastic Food Technology Teacher, starting in September. The successful candidate will take full ownership of a vibrant Food Tech curriculum, teaching across Key Stages 3 and 4. Operating in the third person, the instructor will be responsible for creating an environment where pupils can safely explore culinary techniques, food provenance, and healthy living. The role involves managing an active, practical classroom, ensuring all health and safety regulations are meticulously maintained, and steering young minds toward academic and practical excellence.

Key Requirements

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS): Holds QTS, QTLS, or an equivalent recognised UK teaching qualification.
  • Enhanced DBS: A valid Enhanced DBS clearance registered on the Update Service (or a willingness to apply for one).
  • Curriculum Knowledge: A comprehensive understanding of the UK National Curriculum for Design & Technology (Food) at KS3 and KS4.
  • Eligibility to Work: Valid legal entitlement to work full-time in the UK.

Essential Skills

  • Culinary Expertise: Exceptional practical cooking skills and technical knowledge of food preparation methods.
  • Strong Communication: Ability to break down complex nutritional theories and practical steps into clear, digestible instructions.
  • Classroom Control: Expert ability to manage a high-risk practical environment safely and seamlessly.
  • Adaptability: Skill in tailoring lessons on the fly to support Special Educational Needs (SEN) or stretch high-achieving pupils.
  • Digital Literacy: Proficiency in using educational technology, interactive whiteboards, and data tracking software.
  • Collaboration: A strong team player able to work alongside technicians, department heads, and the wider school staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver High-Quality Lessons: Plan and execute engaging Food Technology lessons that cater to a diverse range of learning styles and abilities.
  • Maintain Health & Safety: Enforce strict hygiene, food safety, and kitchen safety protocols in line with COSHH and school policies.
  • Practical Lesson Management: Oversee live cooking practicals, managing student behaviour, ingredient distribution, and equipment usage effectively.
  • Curriculum Development: Design and update a creative, ambitious curriculum that aligns with national standards and modern food trends.
  • Student Assessment: Monitor, record, and assess student progress using techniques like "exit tickets" and constructive feedback to prepare them for GCSE success.
  • Resource & Budget Control: Manage the department budget, ordering ingredients and maintaining high-quality kitchen inventory.
  • Promote Dietary Awareness: Teach students about nutrition, food provenance, and diverse dietary needs, fostering a healthy relationship with food.
  • Pastoral Support: Act as a form tutor, supporting the emotional and social well-being of students within the school's structured pastoral system.
  • Extracurricular Engagement: Contribute to the school's rich enrichment program by running after-school cooking clubs or culinary competitions.
  • Parental Communication: Maintain regular, transparent communication with parents and guardians regarding student progress and departmental updates.
