Functional Skills Math's Tutor

Dovetail & Slate

Job Title: Functional Skills Maths Tutor

Location: Peterborough / East Midlands area

Salary: From £30,000 per annum

Contract: Permanent, Full-Time

The Opportunity

Are you a passionate Maths tutor looking for a teaching role where your skills genuinely change lives?

We are recruiting for an inspiring Functional Skills Maths Tutor to join a leading prison education provider within a secure custodial environment. In this role, you will deliver City & Guilds qualifications from Entry Level 1 to Level 2. Teaching small, focused groups of up to 12 adult learners, you will help them develop the practical numeracy skills, confidence, and qualifications they need to unlock employment opportunities upon release and build a brighter future.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Engaging Delivery: Plan and deliver inclusive Functional Skills Maths lessons, making the subject practical, accessible, and relevant to real-world success.

  • Individualized Learning: Conduct initial assessments using diagnostic tools (such as BKSB) to map out tailored Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) for each learner.

  • Targeted Support: Adapt your teaching methods to support a wide range of educational backgrounds, individual abilities, and additional learning needs.

  • Exam Preparation: Monitor student progress closely, keeping learners motivated and thoroughly prepared for their assessments and examinations.

  • Collaborative Working: Work alongside prison staff, support practitioners, and employability teams to ensure a safe, positive, and cohesive learning environment.

What We Are Looking For

  • Qualifications: A Level 3 qualification in Mathematics is essential. A Level 5 teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS, or equivalent) is highly desirable.

  • No Teaching Qualification? No Problem! If you have the math expertise and a passion for teaching, our client will fully fund, support, and guide you to achieve your Level 5 teaching qualifications on the job.

  • Experience: Proven experience delivering Functional Skills Maths qualifications. Experience within adult education, further education, or prison education is a major plus.

  • Key Skills: Strong classroom management, excellent lesson planning, and the ability to handle administrative tracking accurately.

Please note: Due to the secure nature of this environment, the successful candidate will be required to undergo an enhanced background check and clear standard prison security clearances.

Why Apply?

This is a stable, highly rewarding position with a dedicated employer committed to your professional growth and well-being. You will enjoy small class sizes, regular daytime hours with no take-home marking, and a supportive team environment where you can see the direct, daily impact of your work.
