Octavius Finance, a specialist recruiter within quantitative financial markets, is working with a $10bn+ hedge fund seeking to hire a Global Thematic Equity Analyst to work directly alongside a highly regarded Equity Long/Short Portfolio Manager.
This is a rare opportunity to join a growing investment team focused on identifying long-term secular themes and translating them into actionable investment opportunities across global equity markets. The successful candidate will combine thematic research, industry analysis and fundamental stock research to help generate differentiated investment ideas for a concentrated long/short portfolio.
The role is particularly well suited to someone who enjoys looking beyond individual companies to understand the broader forces shaping industries, business models and competitive dynamics. You will be encouraged to develop original views, challenge consensus thinking and identify the best ways to express investment themes through both long and short opportunities.
The team invests globally and takes a flexible approach to sector coverage, making this an ideal opportunity for a curious and intellectually driven investor looking to broaden their remit and work across multiple industries.
Key Responsibilities
• Conduct deep-dive thematic research into long-term structural trends, industry disruption and evolving competitive dynamics.
• Generate differentiated investment ideas through a combination of top-down thematic work and bottom-up company analysis.
• Build and maintain detailed financial models and valuation frameworks.
• Analyse industries, supply chains, competitive positioning and management teams.
• Monitor existing portfolio positions and provide ongoing investment recommendations.
• Meet with company management teams, industry experts and relevant market participants.
• Produce high-quality written research and investment presentations.
• Work closely with the Portfolio Manager on idea generation, portfolio construction and investment strategy.
Requirements
• Approximately 4–8 years' experience within a buy-side investment team or sell-side equity research team covering listed equities.
• Candidates must have experience conducting fundamental company research, financial modelling and stock recommendation work.
• Strong company analysis, financial modelling and valuation skills.
• Demonstrated interest in thematic investing, industry research and long-term secular trends.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Intellectual curiosity and the ability to connect macro, industry and company-level developments.
• Strong academic background.
• Individuals from investment banking, consulting, private equity, corporate strategy or other adjacent disciplines without direct equity research experience are unlikely to be suitable.
Backgrounds of interest may include Global Equities, Long/Short Equities, Equity Research, Sector Research, Thematic Research, Equity Strategy, Industrials, Consumer, Technology, Healthcare, Resources, Financials or other sector-focused research roles.
Candidates may currently hold titles such as Equity Research Analyst, Equity Analyst, Buy-Side Analyst, Sell-Side Analyst, Investment Analyst, Sector Analyst, Thematic Analyst, Research Associate or Equity Strategist.
