About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Head of Maintenance to join a leading London based university, overseeing the operational delivery of maintenance services across a large and complex campus.
This role is responsible for managing hard FM services, ensuring statutory compliance, and driving high-quality maintenance delivery across a diverse estate including teaching facilities, laboratories, offices and student accommodation.You will play a key role in ensuring that all buildings and infrastructure are maintained safely, efficiently, and in line with regulatory standards while delivering a first-class service to stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the day to day delivery of maintenance operations across the campus estate
- Manage outsourced hard FM contracts, ensuring SLA and KPI performance
- Oversee both reactive and planned maintenance programmes
- Ensure full compliance with statutory regulations (including asbestos, L8, HV/LV, fire systems, electrical testing and more)
- Manage maintenance budgets and provide regular financial reporting
- Monitor contractor performance, audits, and quality of service delivery
- Review and approve additional works outside contract scope
- Maintain and manage asset registers and condition surveys
- Lead on health & safety, risk assessments (RAMS) and safe systems of work
- Analyse building performance data to improve efficiency and reduce costs
- Act as a key stakeholder in lifecycle and capital projects
- Work collaboratively with internal teams, contractors, and external partners, including NHS stakeholders
About You
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Extensive experience in hard FM/estate maintenance leadership
- Proven track record managing outsourced maintenance contracts
- Strong understanding of statutory compliance and H&S legislation
- Experience managing complex estates or multi-site environments
- Demonstrable ability to manage budgets, contractors, and performance frameworks
- Strong stakeholder management skills in complex environments
- Technical knowledge across building services (HVAC, electrical, mechanical systems)
Desirable:
- Experience within higher education, healthcare, or laboratory environments
- Professional qualifications in engineering, building services, or estate management
- Membership of a relevant professional body
