IT Operations Engineer – Microsoft Cloud & Infrastructure

We are looking for an experienced Operations Engineer to join a growing IT Operations function, taking ownership of core infrastructure, cloud platforms and business-critical services.
This is a senior technical operations role suited to someone with a strong background across Microsoft cloud technologies, infrastructure and systems support. You will act as a key escalation point for complex technical issues while contributing to the ongoing optimisation, automation and improvement of the wider technology environment.
The Role
As an Operations Engineer, you will be responsible for maintaining the performance, availability and security of core systems and services.
You will work across cloud and on-premise infrastructure, owning complex incidents and problems through to resolution while supporting technical change, projects and the introduction of new services.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Supporting and managing Microsoft 365 and Azure environments.
- Acting as a technical escalation point for Service Desk and Desktop Support teams.
- Investigating, diagnosing and resolving complex infrastructure and systems issues.
- Managing and maintaining core systems, applications, hardware and cloud platforms.
- Monitoring infrastructure performance, availability and capacity.
- Identifying recurring technical problems and implementing preventative solutions.
- Delivering system changes in line with established change control processes.
- Supporting backup, disaster recovery and restoration procedures.
- Contributing to infrastructure and cloud projects, owning assigned technical deliverables.
- Producing detailed technical documentation, solution designs and support procedures.
- Automating operational processes, provisioning and reporting through scripting and orchestration.
- Supporting security, vulnerability management and technical risk assessments.
- Working with third-party technology providers to resolve escalated technical issues.
Technical Experience
We are looking for someone with strong experience across Microsoft cloud and infrastructure technologies, including:
- Microsoft Azure.
- Microsoft 365 / E5 environments.
- Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID.
- SharePoint and OneDrive.
- Multi-Factor Authentication, DLP and identity management.
- SaaS and IaaS environments.
- Device and mobility management.
- Windows Server and Windows operating systems.
- VMware and enterprise storage.
- VPN, SASE and cloud security technologies.
- SIEM and security monitoring platforms.
Experience with technologies such as Mimecast, Varonis and Cisco Umbrella would be highly beneficial.
You should also have experience with scripting and automation using technologies such as:
- PowerShell.
- Python.
- JavaScript or equivalent scripting languages.
- Terraform.
- Ansible.
- Chef or Puppet.
Knowledge or experience across CI/CD pipelines, Git repositories and relational databases such as SQL, PostgreSQL or Oracle would also be advantageous.
About You
You will be a technically strong and methodical engineer who is comfortable taking ownership of complex infrastructure and cloud issues.
You should be able to work independently, identify opportunities to improve systems and services, and confidently lead technical investigations through to resolution.
Strong documentation and communication skills are important, alongside a genuine interest in automation, security and continuously improving technology environments.
Desirable Certifications
Relevant Microsoft certifications would be beneficial, including:
- Microsoft 365 Administrator.
- Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate.
- Azure Administrator Associate.
- Endpoint Administrator Associate.
Equivalent commercial experience will also be considered.
