Laboratory Shift Technician
Location: Aston, Birmingham
Salary: £34,500 per annum (including shift allowance)
Hours: Rotating shifts – 6:00am to 2:00pm / 2:00pm to 10:00pm / 10:00pm to 6:00am
About the Role
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Laboratory Shift Technician to join our team in Aston, Birmingham. Reporting to the Senior Laboratory Technician, you will be responsible for carrying out a wide range of laboratory testing, equipment verification, solution analysis, and quality assurance activities to ensure products meet customer specifications and company standards.
The role also includes providing operational cover for shift management during nights and weekends when required.
Key Responsibilities
Verification of Mechanical & Chemical Properties
- Hardness testing
- Tensile testing
- Bend testing
- Spring bend testing
- Grain size determination
- Spectrographic chemical analysis
- Various supplementary tests as required
- Generation of Certificates of Conformity
Verification & Maintenance of Test Equipment
- Routine calibration checks of hardness testers, tensometer and spectrographs
- Daily maintenance of the Spectrolux Container Laboratory
- Maintenance of laboratory equipment as required
Routine Solution Checks
- Verification of acid tank strengths and recommending additions
- Verification of degreaser tank strengths and recommending additions
- Verification of benzotriazole strengths and recommending additions
Structural Analysis
- Routine macrosections of cast structures
- Microsectioning and polishing as required
Inspection of Incoming Raw Materials
- Inspection and testing of virgin and scrap materials
Shift Management Cover
When required to cover night shifts and weekends, responsibilities include:
- Full responsibility for plant operations
- Ensuring health, safety and environmental requirements are adhered to at all times
- Maintaining high quality standards throughout the manufacturing process
- Prioritising jobs and workloads
- Managing staffing levels across manufacturing operations
Candidate Requirements
- Experience working in a laboratory, quality control or manufacturing environment
- Knowledge of mechanical and chemical testing methods
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality standards
- Ability to work independently and make decisions when covering shift management responsibilities
- Good organisational and communication skills
- Commitment to health, safety and environmental compliance
