We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Learning Support Assistant to join our specialist SEMH school in Gloucester. The successful candidate will support pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs, helping them to access education, develop positive relationships and achieve their individual learning goals.
Working closely with teachers, therapists and pastoral staff, the Learning Support Assistant will provide both academic and emotional support, contributing to a safe, nurturing and inclusive learning environment where every young person can thrive.
Key Responsibilities
- Support pupils in the classroom and during individual or small-group learning activities.
- Assist in implementing personalised learning plans and behaviour support strategies.
- Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils to promote engagement, confidence and emotional wellbeing.
- Support pupils in developing social skills, emotional regulation and independence.
- Work collaboratively with teaching staff, therapists and other professionals to meet individual pupil needs.
- Monitor and record pupil progress, behaviour and wellbeing, reporting concerns to relevant staff members.
- Help create a safe, structured and positive learning environment.
- Support pupils during transitions, breaktimes, educational visits and enrichment activities as required.
- Encourage positive behaviour and model appropriate social interactions.
- Assist with safeguarding responsibilities and follow all school policies and procedures.
Person Specification
Essential:
- Experience working with children or young people, preferably within an educational, care or support setting.
- Understanding of Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and associated behavioural challenges.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm, patient and resilient in challenging situations.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
