Salary: £12,219 to £13,552 (pro-rated salary based on FTE salary of £30,549 to £33,882 per annum), depending upon skills and experience

Job type: Permanent, Part-Time (104 working days per annum)

The Portsmouth Grammar School is a leading co-educational school located in the heart of historic Portsmouth.

The Role

Reporting to our Assistant Head (Co-Curriculum), our Outdoor Pursuits Instructor will lead our Outdoor Pursuits programme with passion and energy. The successful candidate will lead, deliver, and further enhance, our well-established Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) programme for pupils in Years 10-12, lead and oversee the School’s indoor climbing provision and develop appropriate Outdoor Pursuit opportunities for the development of pupils in Years 7 to 9. This is a part-time, year-round position, working the equivalent of 15 hours per week (averaging 2 days per week) based on a total of 104 working days per annum. This includes all duties associated with the role, including supporting and leading expeditions (approximately 30 days), planning, administration and preparation (approximately 69 days) and Professional Development Days (5 days) scheduled in the School calendar. Working days can be allocated flexibly across the year in consultation with the line manager and to meet the operational requirements of the role.

Main Responsibilities

  • To lead and further develop our Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) award programme for pupils in Years 10 to 12
  • To plan and deliver outdoor activities, expeditions and residential trips
  • To ensure safe and compliant delivery of all activities
  • To manage equipment and outdoor resources
  • To lead and oversee the School’s indoor climbing provision
  • To develop appropriate Outdoor Pursuit opportunities for the development of pupils in Years 7 to 9
  • To ensure safe and compliant delivery of all activities
  • To contribute to wider co-curricular and enrichment activities
  • To undertake all necessary training required by the school, to include safeguarding
  • To ensure the safeguarding of pupils

The Ideal Candidate

  • A good standard of education with excellent spoken and written English
  • A full, clean driving licence (essential) with a D1 category licence (desirable) and a willingness to drive school minibuses in support of Outdoor Pursuit activities
  • Mountain Leader or Wild Open Moorland qualification
  • Qualification to deliver instruction on a climbing wall (or a commitment to gain this qualification)
  • Experience of planning and delivering the DofE award scheme and adventurous training expeditions
  • DofE Assessor
  • Current Outdoor First Aid qualification
  • Able to inspire and engage pupils and create meaningful and challenging experiences
  • A flexible and proactive attitude to the role
  • An enjoyment of working with children and young people, and a willingness to participate fully in school life
  • Willingness to undertake all necessary safeguarding and other staff training

The start date will be September 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter
