At the RSPB, creating a safe, secure and welcoming environment is at the heart of everything we do. As our Security Co-ordinator, you’ll play an important role in supporting this across two sites: UKHQ at The Lodge in Sandy, Bedfordshire, and the Logistics and Distribution Centre in Bedford. This is primarily an on-site role based at The Lodge, with regular patrols and visits to the Bedford site.
The Lodge is both the RSPB’s UK Headquarters and a much loved nature reserve, welcoming visitors every day. You’ll work closely with reserve staff, volunteers and colleagues to support facilities, physical security and day to day operation helping ensure everyone who works at or visits the site feels safe and supported.
What’s the role about?
You will coordinate site security, helping to minimise risks and maintain a safe and compliant environment. Acting as the first point of contact for out of hours queries, you’ll provide a wide range of operational security support across UKHQ.
This includes monitoring security systems and working with contractors, equipment suppliers and external security providers to ensure services are fully operational and delivered to a high standard. You’ll identify and escalate issues, recommend or take action to resolve them, and regularly review and improve security processes.
You’ll carry out key operational tasks, including daily site lock-up (Monday to Friday), ensuring buildings are secure, and liaising with colleagues and security providers for activities such as late openings or emergencies. You’ll also manage the UKHQ ID card and access system, ensuring appropriate access for staff, visitors and contractors while maintaining security and compliance.
The role involves maintaining accurate records and reporting on security, health and safety, fire and incidents, including carrying out investigations where needed. You’ll provide regular updates to senior colleagues and bring together relevant H&S and security information to support the wider team. From time to time, you may also support additional duties in line with operational needs.
Essential skills and experience:
- Demonstrable experience of supporting site security operations, including monitoring systems, following procedures, and contributing to a safe and secure environment
- Holds, or is willing and able to obtain on appointment, an SIA Public Space Surveillance (CCTV) licence and Level 2 CCTV Operations (PSS) qualification
- Ability to travel between and work across multiple sites, including carrying out regular patrols (e.g. holds a valid driving licence or can demonstrate an alternative means of meeting this requirement)
- Ability to identify, assess and respond to incidents or risks, making sound decisions and escalating appropriately
- Experience of monitoring systems and working with contractors or service providers to ensure services are delivered effectively
- Ability to maintain accurate records, manage data, and produce clear reports on incidents, security matters and actions taken
- Confidence in using standard digital tools (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook or equivalent) to support administration, communication and reporting
- Ability to organise and prioritise tasks, manage competing demands, and adapt to changing circumstances, including working under pressure
- Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively with a wide range of people, including colleagues, contractors, volunteers and visitors
- Willingness and ability to respond to out-of-hours queries and attend site when required, supporting operational needs across the service
This is a Permanent Full-Time role for 37.5 hours per week.
