KS3 Teacher (SEN – Subject Specialist, Autism Provision)

Purpose of the Role
The KS3 Subject Specialist Teacher will be responsible for delivering high-quality, autism-informed teaching in English Language/Literature to pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and associated needs.
The post holder will adapt the KS3 curriculum to meet the individual needs of pupils in a small-class specialist setting, ensuring learning is accessible, meaningful, and ambitious while supporting pupils' communication, emotional regulation, independence, and wellbeing.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Learning
- Plan, deliver, and assess high-quality, adapted lessons.
- Adapt the KS3 curriculum to meet the needs of pupils with ASC and associated needs
- Use autism-specific and evidence-based approaches
Pupil Development & Wellbeing
- Support pupils
- Communication and interaction o Emotional regulation and behaviour
- Independence and self-confidence
- Engagement in learning and school life
- Implement positive behaviour and regulation strategies in line with the school's autism-informed approach
- Maintain high expectations for both learning and behaviour
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
- Experience of teaching pupils in KS3
- Substantial experience supporting pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ideally in a specialist or SEND setting
- Strong understanding of: Autism and associated needs (e.g. sensory processing, anxiety, communication differences)
Desirable Criteria
- Experience working in a specialist SEN or autism provision
- Experience adapting a subject curriculum for pupils working significantly below age-related expectations
- Additional SEND or autism-specific training
- Experience working with non-speaking or minimally speaking pupils
- Experience contributing to subject leadership or curriculum development
