World Class Defence Organisation based in Bristol is currently looking to recruit a Command & Control Sub-System Engineering Lead subcontractor on an initial 6 month contract, with very likely extension. The role will be onsite 3-4 days per week. A 4 day working week is OK (Monday to Thursday).
This role would suit candidates with a strong background as a Senior Systems Engineer, Systems Engineering Lead, Systems Engineering Team Lead, Principal Systems Engineer, Lead Systems Engineer, Systems Architect or Technical Lead within a systems engineering and Defence or Aerospace environment.
Rate: £70.00 per hour
Overtime Rate: Hours worked over the standard 37 hours per week, will be paid at ‘time and a quarter’
Location: Bristol
Hybrid / Remote working: The role will be onsite 3-4 days per week. A 4 day working week is OK (Monday to Thursday).
Duration: 6 Months with very likely extension. Contracts are often ongoing and long-term thereafter.
IR35 status: Inside IR35 (Umbrella)

Command & Control Sub-System Engineering Lead Job Description:
This role is an excellent opportunity to join an exciting project, maturing the design of a key subsystem on a high-profile project aiming to deliver the Royal Navy’s first operational Laser Directed Energy Weapon (LDEW) capability in rapid timescales.
The role has good visibility and engagement across a range of weapon system design areas, primarily System Design, Software and Algorithms areas.
Responsibilities:
- Provide day-to-day management, direction and technical leadership (including activity tracking and project reporting) of the multi-functional Common Architecture Team (CAT).
- Lead the capture, derivation, and refinement of subsystem requirements for the Command & Control subsystem.
- Work collaboratively with the CAT to deliver the Command & Control sub-system functional architecture.
- Identify and capture functional risks, opportunities, issues and assumptions and their associated mitigation strategies.
Skillset/experience required:
- Product development / systems thinking mindset.
- Excellent stakeholder management skills.
- Experience across the systems engineering / product development lifecycle, with an emphasis on successful project delivery.
- Experience of functional design and development.
- Proactive and self-managing, with an ability to work under pressure to deliver successful outcomes on demanding timescales.
- Practical knowledge and experience of system engineering processes and tools (e.g. IBM Rhapsody, IBM DOORS, IBM Engineering Workflow Management).
- Experience designing complex systems in a defence or other highly regulated environment
- Experience working in or leading a cross-functional engineering teams.
- Experience developing air defence or LDEW complex weapon systems.
