Systems Accountant

Counted Recruitment

About the Business

A fantastic opportunity to join a well-established, UK-wide services business as a Systems Accountant, based in Birmingham City Centre, paying £55,000 – £70,000. This is a pivotal role at the heart of the finance function, with a genuine focus on system improvement and integration across different projects, automation, and the responsible use of AI. You’ll lead the way on shaping and improving finance systems while also overseeing a small management accounts team, working closely with the Director of Finance to define how finance operates for the future. This role has hybrid working arrangement with only 2 days in the office.

Main Duties

As a Systems Accountant, your main duties include:

  • Take ownership of the day-to-day running of all finance systems, keeping them reliable, accurate, and performing at their best
  • Act as the main link to the external technology partner, building a strong working relationship that keeps systems maintained, issues resolved, and future improvements moving forward
  • Plan and deliver system upgrades and enhancements from end to end – covering testing, roll-out, and keeping internal stakeholders informed throughout
  • Lead the design and introduction of new finance systems, alongside enhancements to the platforms already in place
  • Identify and roll out automation and AI-enabled tools – such as workflow automation, intelligent reconciliation, and smarter reporting – to streamline finance processes
  • Oversee the management accounts team and the production of accurate monthly management accounts
  • Map finance processes from start to finish, pinpointing where automation, standardisation, and AI can add the most value
  • Build and maintain clear process maps and documentation, including system controls and dependencies
  • Safeguard the accuracy, consistency, and integrity of data across every finance system and source
  • Support richer reporting and dashboards, drawing on AI-supported analytics to sharpen forecasting, trend analysis, and decision-making
  • Be the go-to contact for systems queries, training, and user support, helping colleagues grow in confidence with new tools
  • Keep finance systems well-controlled and compliant, supporting audit activity and ensuring any AI and automation is adopted responsibly

Location / Office / Culture

This role is hybrid, with 2 days a week in a modern Birmingham City Centre office and the remainder from home. You’ll be part of a collaborative finance function within a stable, UK-wide business, working alongside the Director of Finance and wider colleagues across finance, data, and technology. It’s a genuinely forward-looking environment where you’ll have the autonomy to influence how finance systems evolve.

What We Are Looking For

The ideal candidate will have:

  • ACA / ACCA / CIMA qualified – strongly preferred, though not essential, with those qualified by experience also considered
  • Proven experience implementing, upgrading, or supporting finance systems (e.g. ERP, purchase order, or budgeting and forecasting tools)
  • A strong grasp of core finance processes and how finance systems fit together
  • A track record of delivering automation or system-driven efficiencies within finance
  • Confident analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to turn data into meaningful insight
  • Experience leading and motivating a team
  • Exposure to Power BI or AI-enabled finance tools is desirable, but not essential

Why Join the business

  • Lead and develop your own management accounts team
  • Work at the cutting edge of finance technology, automation, and AI
  • Join a stable, well-established business operating right across the UK
