Are you passionate about supporting young people's physical and emotional wellbeing within an education setting?

Do you have the clinical awareness, calm approach, and interpersonal skills to respond to student health needs, provide first aid care, and support safeguarding and pastoral welfare in a secondary school environment?

Tradewind Recruitment is partnering with a welcoming and inclusive secondary school in Barnet seeking to appoint a dedicated Welfare Officer (Medical & Pastoral) from September 2026. This full-time role is ideal for individuals with a background in first aid, healthcare support, nursing, youth work, or school pastoral care who are looking to work within an education-based welfare and safeguarding setting.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a supportive school community, playing a key role in managing student medical needs alongside wider wellbeing, attendance, and safeguarding responsibilities.

The Role

As a Welfare Officer (Medical & Pastoral), you will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day health, welfare, and safety of students across the school.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing first aid and immediate medical support to students and staff when required
  • Assessing and responding to minor injuries, illnesses, and medical incidents in line with school procedures
  • Maintaining accurate medical and welfare records in accordance with safeguarding and GDPR requirements
  • Administering prescribed medication following care plans and school protocols
  • Supporting students with ongoing medical conditions (e.g. asthma, epilepsy, allergies, diabetes)
  • Acting as a key point of contact for medical and welfare concerns throughout the school day
  • Liaising with parents, carers, school nurses, and external health professionals where appropriate
  • Supporting safeguarding referrals where medical concerns intersect with student welfare
  • Monitoring attendance linked to medical needs and supporting reintegration plans where required
  • Promoting student wellbeing, hygiene, and healthy lifestyle awareness across the school
  • Supporting the wider pastoral team with vulnerable students and those experiencing emotional distress

The Ideal Candidate

The school is seeking a calm, compassionate, and medically aware individual who can confidently manage student welfare in a busy secondary school environment.

You will have:

  • A degree or relevant experience working with young people in a secondary school setting
  • Valid First Aid qualification (essential or willingness to update immediately)
  • Experience supporting secondary school-aged students (Key Stages 3 and 4 essential)
  • Experience or understanding of basic medical care, health conditions, or school nursing support
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to remain calm and effective in medical or emergency situations
  • A good understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail in record keeping
  • A proactive and caring approach to student welfare and wellbeing

Previous experience in healthcare, nursing support, medical administration, pastoral care, youth work, or school welfare roles is highly desirable but not essential.

Why Apply?

  • Join a supportive and inclusive secondary school in Barnet
  • Play a key role in both medical welfare and pastoral safeguarding support
  • Gain valuable experience for careers in nursing, school health services, safeguarding, youth work, or education welfare
  • Work alongside experienced pastoral leaders, safeguarding teams, and external health professionals
  • Full-time, term-time only role starting September 2026
  • Excellent opportunities for training and professional development in school-based healthcare support
  • Be part of a school community that prioritises student safety, wellbeing, and holistic care
